A Tale From ’96 And Some Loungewear Talk

Ah! I’m SO CLOSE to showing you what exactly will be ready for my next launch. My model, one of my bikini model goddesses, is coming over this weekend and it’s gonna be crazay! j/k Seriously though, we will be shooting this weekend and I’m so eager to update the shop with post-swimsuit looks. Hopefully, I’ll also be shooting some kids stuff, if my fiery little model and muse is in a good mood. If not, I’m gonna recruit your child to be my model. Not kidding.

So what will we be shooting? Some comfy loungewear made of recycled fibers and wool. Here’s a pair of “jean shorts” made of recycled denim. It’s not completely sewn up here. There will be different washes like dark denim, stonewash, and perhaps some non-blue colors.

There will also be matching tops, which is super important…

It was 1996 and some friends invited me to Pajama Night at Cafe 50s in West L.A, which only happens on the last Wednesday of every night. **This is NOT an advertisement for Cafe 50’s, but a cautionary tale.** The deal is, you show up in your pajamas and you get to eat for free. So, I wore my cutesy pastel colored fleece drawstring pajama pants that my mom made for me, and a sleep shirt. We were a large group so we waited a bit for our table, which was fine because this was fun and wacky! After we got seated, our server said that my pajamas weren’t approved because the pajamas had to be two-piece MATCHING top and bottom, which meant that I had to pay for my meal. The nerve! So, yes, there will be matching tops with these loungewear bottoms. You’re welcome.

New sweater

Next up, I’m not 100% sure that I’ll be offering this sweater in the shop, but I at least want to show you this toddler pullover that I made for my niece/muse. It’s completely made from recycled fibers. This still needs to be sewn together, but you can get the gist. If things go well, I may even make a matching one for myself. And maybe one for you? Would you be into it?

More Unique Than Expected

I love that the baskets are made of reclaimed materials

Did you know that the Amy Eve Jo baskets are made of reclaimed fabric remnants from the garment industry?

That’s the biggest reason I chose to work with this yarn, because I liked saving this versatile material from being tossed in the landfill. However that means that the yarn’s availability is unpredictable. I knew that going in, but I didn’t realize just how limited the supplies were. That means, the baskets in the shop, are actually ONE-OF-A-KIND pieces, making them way more unique than I expected. I suppose that’s the nature of using recycled/reclaimed materials. I liken it to chefs who frequently change their menus based on what they find at the farmers market.

I’m brainstorming on how to best work out a system for handling unpredictably limited products. For now, I’ve implemented a “Waitlist” system to the website. If the item is sold out, the product title will indicate “(Waitlist Only)”. And when you click on that item’s page, you’ll see a button to “Subscribe to waitlist.” When you submit your email address, I’ll email you when the item is available again. Super easy!

On a related note, you can also save your favorite products by clicking on “Add to Wishlist.” This will be available on all products, whether it’s in stock. You’ll be able to see your Wishlist on your “Wishlist” and “My Account” pages. And if you’re not a registered user of the site, the Wishlist will stay active for 30 days.

Love Denim?

Denim is pretty much a part of my daily uniform. I love the stuff! So, I’m totally excited that my favorite things–yarn, denim, and sustainability–have combined in the form of yarn that’s made of 100% recycled denim. I should receive my box of recycled denim yarn in a matter of days, so I’ll let you know how it works out.

Amy Eve Jo is seven months old!

On the eve of the website’s seven month anniversary, last week, I decided to give it a makeover. I’m still working out some image-sizing issues but overall, I’m quite pleased with the new look.

September is for bikinis?

Apparently so! If you’ve connected with me on social media, you know that I crocheted a custom bikini last month. Here’s the picture I posted on Instagram.

Well, I thought I’d be working on Fall and Winter stuff in September, but I’ve been getting more requests for the bikini. Such a pleasant surprise because I love making these. Next month, I’ll REALLY be moving into Fall/Winter mode. I’m excited about some new yarns I’ve been researching and playing with, which have a particular focus on repurposed or natural fibers.

In next month’s email update, I expect to share some new products for the colder seasons. Until then, the best places to see me microblog is on Instagram and Facebook. I’d love to connect with you there!

Crocheted baskets: handles or no handles?

This is an email I sent to subscribers on June 19, 2015. Be sure to sign up for my email list to get these types of email-only updates and offers.

Happy June!

Do you love stylish ways to tidy up your space? When I was in fourth grade, my class learned marketing by running our own pretend businesses. I created a store called “The Closet Room” and it was a home organizing store with an emphasis on stylish walk-in closets. So, my love for organization decor has been with me for a long time.

In preparation for updating the Amy Eve Jo shop, I’ve been crocheting baskets that are great for wrangling piles of loose items. Right now, I have some filled with my niece’s legos and, of course, my yarn. They’re flexible and bendy, rather than their more rigid classic woven counterparts. So, they’re a bit of a basket/bag hybrid.

Right now, they’re 8″ wide (diameter) and about 6″ tall, and more sizes will be available.

I’m having fun playing with colors that would be delightful in your home or work space and I’m excited for you to see them. Here are a couple looks:

Crocheted basket - beige, white, pink, and turquoise

black green and white crocheted basket

I can’t decide. Handles or no handles?

Which one do you like better? The version with handles or no handles? I intend to offer both, but that won’t be possible for some colors. Please hit REPLY and let me know what you think about the handles debate. I’m eager to hear from you!

Spring is here, the sky is blue…

Can you name this tune? Here’s a little more…

…Birds all sing / As if they knew….

The answer is, “Chapel Of Love” by The Dixie Cups! No, no one is getting married around Amy Eve Jo HQ, but that song just came to mind because I want to wish you HAPPY SPRINGTIME!

FUN FACT: When my sisters and I were kids, we had go-to songs that we’d sing in harmony, and “Going to the Chapel” was one of them. I wanna say we were around 6, 10, and 14. I always sang the melody because I needed to plug my ears to sing the other parts. Our other numbers were “More Than Words” by Extreme, and “Castle On A Cloud” from Les Misérables.

Back to business. 🙂 I’ve been researching and developing new products to add to the shop. I’ve gotten requests for bikinis, so I’m looking into that. I’m also planning for pillows, cover ups, hair ties, beaded accessories, and children’s items. Plus, I’m diving deeper into sourcing earth-friendly materials. For example, I recently bought some yarn that’s made of t-shirt factory remnants, which is awesome because that fabric would otherwise go in the landfill. I’m excited to share my new creations with you in next month’s email.

For now, I want to properly THANK YOU for being a PIONEER as an Amy Eve Jo early adopter. Soon, I’ll be offering 20% off for new email subscribers, and I feel that’s unfair to you, who signed up as an early supporter and didn’t get a proper thank you discount. Everyone else’s thank you discount will only be good for one purchase, but I want to show you my extra appreciation by offering the discount for TWO uses, and an extended expiration date, 5/31/15. Just use the code, “earlybird” at checkout.

Look at how happy I am that you’re a subscriber!

I’m also aiming to get a regular blog going on the site. Until then, the best places to see me microblog is on Instagram and Facebook. I’d love to connect with you there!

Machine washable cowls in new colors

This is an archive of the email I sent to subscribers on March 13, 2015. Be sure to sign up for my email list to get these types of email-only updates and offers.

Happy March!

Thank you so much for supporting me in my first month of business. Launching my online shop is a dream come true for me and your support means so much to me.

Show me yours

I’d be SO happy if you’d post pictures of yourselves wearing your Amy Eve Jo wares on social media and to tag me. Just tag “Amy Wang” on Facebook or @amyevejo on Instagram.

Ice cream colored cowls and custom requests

If you have custom color requests for anything you see in the shop, email me, and I’m pretty sure I can source a close match to whatever you’re looking for. For instance, I received a request for a white Vim Cowl, and BOOM, the white Vim Cowl is now in the shop, along with three other new editions to the chunky and airy cowl family.

The four new options are nicknamed, in my head, as Cookies ‘n Cream, Vanilla, and Strawberry Cheesecake. You can find them listed in the shop with their more dignified real names, black with white, vanilla, pink, and white:

Picnic Cowl

Amy-Eve-Jo-Picnic-Cowl-VanillaAmy-Eve-Jo-Picnic-Cowl-Black-White main

This cowl is the same style as the “Vim Cowl,” pictured below, except that it’s completely machine wash and dry-able.

So, why would anyone get the “Vim Cowl,” which isn’t machine wash and dry-able? Well, the Picnic Cowl has a higher percentage of acrylic, which is what makes it safe for the machine. However, it’s also a tad less soft and smooshy than the Vim. It’s still very soft, comfortable, and fluffier than most scarves I’ve seen from mass retailers, but it’s just not as soft as the Vim.

Vim Cowl

Amy-Eve-Jo-Vim-Cowl-Pink mainWhite Vim Cowl - Amy Eve Jo

The “Vim Cowl” was part of the launch collection. This week, I’ve added the pink and white versions.

This one is NOT machine washable, because it’ll turn into felt if you do. So, spot clean, hand wash, or dry clean this one. Sure, it’s a little more work to clean, but it’s worth it if you prefer a more smooshy soft feel.
